Nancy Johnston
MAES, EcD, C.EcD, Director of Strategic Initiatives
Nancy is an accomplished community and economic development professional with 30 years of experience. As a result, Nancy has a comprehensive appreciation of municipal government and familiarity with the nuances of the municipal process in large, small, and rural communities. She understands how communities function and the foundations of effective corporate governance in the municipal sector. Nancy’s passion is to understand the uniqueness of communities and to guide them to prosper through sustainable development practices.
My Story
I am motivated with the discovery of new things and new places. Not one to shy away from a challenge I always push my limits be it in my life or work. Whether it’s visiting cultures in different countries or exploring my local region, I am always on the lookout for my next adventure.
As Director of Strategic Initiatives this is a positive attribute. I enjoy exploring the communities that I work in, to find what makes the community unique. My interest in economic development was piqued when I worked at the City of Ottawa. The experience I had through the economic development office helped determine the direction of my career and I have worked in various facets of economic development ever since.
Through my travels, and work experiences I have been fortunate to be able to explore many places. When I’m not consulting with clients and writing strategies, I am spending time outdoors hiking, supporting the local arts and music scene, or enjoying the company of friends and family.
My latest adventure was a ‘trip of a lifetime’. It was highlighted by a visit to Piñán, a remote community in the northern Andes of Ecuador, to meet descendants of the Kichwa Indigenous peoples of the area and to better understand their culture. Now I am helping to support a nonprofit group that provides educational opportunities for high school graduates in Piñán to attend a post secondary education.
